Violet Vines Wines Reviewed by James Suckling

April 28, 2023

For the first time, Violet Vines submitted wines for formal review by James Suckling’s team in March 2023.  We submitted three of our 2021 estate Pinot Noir’s and below are the results.

2021 Violet Vines Origin Block Pinot Noir, 91 pts.

Pretty nose of lavender, thyme, wild strawberries, currants and orange zest. It’s fresh with excellent energy, tight tannins and gentle spice notes at the end.  Drink or hold.

2021 Violet Vines Ultra Violet Pinot Noir, 90 pts.

Cherry stones, nutmeg, crushed stones, walnuts and watermelon rind here.  Medium-bodied and balanced, with a nice stony minerality and fine tannins.  Drink now.

2021 Violet Vines Andrew Block Single Clone 115 Pinot Noir, 90 pts.

Rose hips, potpourri, green strawberries and vanilla on the nose.  Ripe, red-fruited and sweetly spiced, with a medium body and powdery tannins.  Lingering vanilla.  Drink now.

As noted on jamessuckling.com, “We rate wines using the 100-point scale.  James has used this point system for most of his career and still believes that it’s the simplest way to rate a wine.  A wine rated 90 points or more is outstanding.  A wine rated 95 points or more  (A+) is a must buy.  A wine rated less than 88 points might still be worth buying but proceed with caution.”

The Violet Vines wines that are reviewed by James Suckling are available for purchase online, at the estate vineyard and in the tasting room.  Note: The Ultra Violet Pinot Noir is available for purchase upon joining the Violet Vines wine club.  For information on tastings, visit our Reservations page or email us at tasting@violetvines.com
