A Short Primer On Why Pinot Noir Excels (and why clones matter)

July 17, 2024

Pinot Noir wine is highly popular for several reasons:

  1. Complexity and Elegance: Pinot Noir is known for its complex and nuanced flavor profile, often exhibiting notes of red fruits (like cherry, raspberry, and strawberry), earthiness, floral elements, and sometimes hints of spices. Its light to medium body and silky texture make it an elegant and sophisticated wine.
  2. Versatility: Pinot Noir pairs well with a wide range of foods due to its balanced acidity and subtle tannins. It complements dishes like roasted chicken, duck, salmon, and mushroom-based dishes, making it a favorite among chefs and food enthusiasts.
  3. Terroir Expression: Pinot Noir is highly sensitive to its growing conditions, meaning it expresses the unique characteristics of its terroir (the climate, soil, and geography of the vineyard). This makes each bottle a unique reflection of where it was grown, offering wine enthusiasts a diverse tasting experience. A cooler growing region is essential to produce the highest quality Pinot noir and such growing regions are becoming scarcer and scarcer to find.
  4. Heritage and Prestige: Pinot Noir has a storied history, especially in Burgundy, France, where some of the world’s most esteemed and expensive wines are produced. This long-standing heritage adds to its allure and prestige.
  5. Aging Potential: High-quality Pinot Noir has good aging potential, allowing it to develop more complex flavors and aromas over time. This makes it a desirable choice for collectors and connoisseurs.
  6. Lighter Style: Compared to many other red wines, Pinot Noir is lighter in body and lower in tannins, which makes it approachable for a wider audience, including those who may not typically enjoy heavier reds.

These attributes contribute to Pinot Noir’s widespread popularity among both casual wine drinkers and serious enthusiasts.

Before ending this blog, and because it’s one of the top five questions in the tasting room, we thought we would add a short description of what’s meant by a Pinot noir clone and why they are collectively important to the winemaking process and to varying palettes.

A Pinot noir clone is a genetically distinct variant of the Pinot noir grapevine, selected for specific traits such as flavor profile, ripening time, disease resistance, and adaptability to different climates and soils. These clones arise from mutations that occur naturally over time and are propagated through cuttings to ensure consistency in vineyards.

The importance of Pinot noir clones lies in several key aspects:

  1. Diversity and Adaptation: Different clones can thrive in varying environmental conditions, allowing winemakers to cultivate Pinot noir in diverse regions while maintaining high quality.
  2. Complexity and Style: Each clone can contribute unique characteristics to the wine, such as different aromas, flavors, and textures. By planting multiple clones, winemakers can create more complex and balanced wines.
  3. Consistency: Clonal selection helps ensure consistency in wine production. By choosing clones that perform well in a specific vineyard, winemakers can produce more reliable and high-quality wines year after year.
  4. Disease Resistance: Some clones are selected for their resistance to specific diseases or pests, reducing the need for chemical interventions and promoting sustainable viticulture.

Overall, Pinot noir clones provide winemakers with tools to tailor their vineyards and wines to their desired outcomes, enhancing both the quality and the diversity of Pinot noir wines available to consumers.
