V2 Uncorked Fall 2024

September 19, 2024

Happy “Harvest” 2024 everyone!

We hope everyone had an amazing Summer. We’re waiting on our first fruit to come in from the vineyard, hence it’s officially the calm before the 65-ton storm!

In the Winery

We’re just about ready to start receiving fruit from all over Oregon.  Our Chenin Blanc, Albariño, Rocks Chardonnay and Ribbon Ridge Pinot noir will be the first to arrive (the week of September 23rd), with other varietals and vineyards following. We’re a little delayed when compared to the last few vintages, so it’s likely we’ll still be actively barreling wine all the way through Thanksgiving this year. Regardless, we’re not rushing anything as we welcome the longer hang time to develop flavor.

Although we will be producing many of the wines we’ve made in the past, new varietals this year include Pinotage and Carménère.

For those of you that are local to the area and wish to participate in the winemaking process, send Brian an email (brian@violetvines.com) and he’ll reply with the latest schedule on grape processing.  Fair warning though… you will leave sticky and purple (for the red wine making days that is!).

In the Vineyards

With the weather forecast calling for warm (not hot) and dry days for the next two weeks, we could be in store for a magical vintage.  Sugar levels are rising but when it comes to taste, the grapes are already phenomenal!

Our first harvest from our Rocks District vineyard is probably three weeks away. We’re expecting about seven tons of Syrah, with the inaugural Grenache and Mourvèdre grapes arriving next year.

The Sheridan vineyard is thriving. After experiencing some minor frost damage affecting some of the Chardonnay and Pinot noir earlier in the Spring, we’re expecting a fantastic vintage due to idyllic weather conditions throughout the growing season. We’re going to make a prediction…  based solely on sampling fruit off the vine, the 2024 Andrew Block Pinot Noir will be EPIC!!!!  In about 18 months, let us know if you agree.

In the Tasting Room

Some of you may know that we’ve only been “Oregonians” for just shy of three years.  We’re born and raised in Ohio and we’ve been life-long Cleveland and Ohio sports fans.  Why are we bringing this up?

October 12th…  THE Ohio State Buckeye football team welcomes the Oregon Ducks to the Big 10 by visiting Eugene.  Could we go to the game?  Sure!  But what’s more fun is hosting a watch party at our tasting room!  This day will officially be our Fall Wine Club Member pick up party.  If you are a local wine club member you (and two guests) are invited.  Your fall allocation will be ready for you along with a curated flight of exciting wines and football appetizers.  Let us know you’re coming by either emailing us or making a reservation online.   We will be open at 12 with the game starting at 4:30pm (we’ll be open until it ends!).  We’ll be decked out in Scarlet and Grey (with Brian wearing an obnoxious baseball cap) but we won’t turn away anyone wearing White and Green.  For those of you who may not be a wine club member, we would also like to welcome you in by reservation (walk ins based on availability) to join in the fun with complimentary appetizers.

During our last newsletter, we mentioned we’re about to launch a complimentary virtual tasting experience for out-of-town wine club members.  Look for an announcement right after harvest!

Upcoming Events

Although not “technically” upcoming, we’re looking forward to participating in the Willamette Valley Wineries Association Wine Action May 14th and 15th 2025 (https://www.willamettewines.auction/).  Next year will have a different format which is why we’d like to bring it up now.  In the past, this was a trade-only event (distributors, restaurants, retail establishments), but in 2025, the auction will be open to individual collectors looking to acquire one-of-a-kind lots created exclusively for the auction. Additionally, collectors can bid on individual cases of wine.

May 14th is all about tasting wines from the participating wineries and then bidding via an online platform, which is designed specifically for the individual wine collector. May 15th is the live trade (distributor/restaurant/retail) auction followed by a celebratory party for all participants.

If you’re interested in joining live, let us know! We have a limited number of tickets available on a first-come-first-serve basis, and after that, you can register online.  We’ll also organize a small dinner on the 13th for those in town.  If you can’t make it, don’t worry, you can still register to bid virtually from anywhere globally. Visit the auction website to learn more or email us for more information (contactus@violetvines.com).

That’s it for now.  We hope you have a great start to the Fall and if you’re in the area, please stop by and visit us in Carlton (and remember, you’re welcome to join us in the winery too!).

Cheers!
Brian and April
